True. Though the Japanese have a far more homogenous society than we do, so the need to distinguish themselves in such terms as monetary wealth, versus the strength of social cohesion, might make it a different dynamic than we would have to deal with.
We would not be the first nation, or empire, to debase its currency, trying to keep everyone happy.

Though the issue of Japan does go back to our initial point of contention; The strength and durability of the community, with finance and money as a useful tool to that end. Not the bottom line as the ultimate arbiter.
Obviously the Japanese are more focused on the stability of their society and use money, however it might be contorted, as a tool, not a goal.
