Unfortunately it goes pretty deeply into the mechanism of conscious perception, as our minds are quite reductionist, in having to sort useful signals from all the energy and noise and money has become a most reductionist distillation of effort.

The problem is that society functions as the interrelationship of rights and responsibilities. For which we have currently quantified "work" as the area of responsibility, while money and status pretty much define our access to rights, irrespective of all the pretty slogans otherwise. Given the degree the relationship between these two has been separated, it is breaking down the fabric of society.
