We are linear, goal oriented creatures in a cyclical, reciprocal, feedback generated reality, so while markets need money to circulate, we see it as the signal to extract and store, from the noise of society and the economy. Requiring ever more to be added and ever more metastatic ways to store what has been extracted.
Since it largely functions as a contract, with one side an asset and the other a debt, this requires sufficient debt to be generated, to store the assets.
One way is to restrict money flowing through the essential economy, so it has to incur more debt and the other is for the government to be debtor of last resort. The capital markets could not function, without the government siphoning up trillions in surplus capital. The secret sauce of capitalism is that public debt backs private wealth.
