We are linear, goal oriented organisms in a cyclical, circular, reciprocal, feedback generated reality and we don't have the sense to know the feedback loops need circuit breakers to keep everything from spinning out of control, so we periodically have these gran mal seizures.

Such as using wealth and power to accumulate more wealth and power, irrespective of the health of the larger society.
