Specialists and generalists. In this world generalists are derided as dabblers, but in the army, generals run the show, while specialist is about one rank above private.

The kids who would become generalists are the ones interested in everything. Then, as they grow older, they learn how all the various parts fit together, but in this world, these kids are diagnosed as attention deficient and medicated until their minds fit back in the box.

That's why the world has become a global Tower of Babel.
